Myaree Substation
PROPOSED UPGRADE FROM 66/22kV to 132/66kV

DEMOLISH THIS TO DO THIS ?
NO WAY!
Where it all began:
In April 2009 some of the neighbouring residents of the Myaree Substation in Booragoon received a letter from Western Power notifying them that they had purchased two properties adjacent to the current substation (one being in the residential zone). It also informed them that Western Power intended to commence expansion works in late 2011 with construction scheduled for completion in 2013. For a copy of the letter Click Here.
No details were included relating to the extent of the expansion, what the work would entail or how this may affect the neighbouring residents.
The content of the letter and the lack of information raised suspicion amongst residents prompting further investigation. It soon became apparent that this proposed expansion was more than just minor works as the letter would imply, but that the intention was to develop this small substation into what is virtually an industrial sized substation. One that is totally out of place amongst prime residential properties.
It would have been reasonable to suggest that Western Power followed due process as required by the Electricity Corporations Act 2005, Section 60(4)(b) i.e. neighbouring residents and the City of Melville community at large should have been given the opportunity to provide input, whether of a positive or negative nature.
Extensive investigation has revealed aspects of this proposed upgrade that are of the utmost concern not only to the residents of Alfred Cove, Booragoon and Myaree but to those in other Perth municipalities as well. Noise is just one of the numerous issues.
